After months of research and planning we now have just 3 weeks until we start the first leg of our trip in Europe. We were originally planning on using larger 75 Liter bags but went with 35 and 38 Liter packs for the sake of ease and to avoid having to check any luggage.
Although it’s tempting to pack everything you could possibly need for any situation, it just won’t work when you’re backpacking. Whatever you decide to take will be attached to your backs for the entire trip and you have to be able to carry the load. It just isn’t feasible to climb hills or run to catch a train with a ton of weight on your back and you never know how far you have to walk from the bus or train station to get to wherever you’re staying.
Maximize your experience by minimizing your burden. Pack light! This is the measure of a smart traveler and can’t be stressed enough. No one ever returns from a trip abroad and says, “Next time I need to pack more”. If you’re unsure whether or not to pack a particular item, ask yourself if you’ll use it enough to justify carrying it the whole trip.
We evaluated what we really need to have and I’ve posted an inventory pic here for reference:
