Trying to Learn Some Portuguese

For some unknown reason, I had thought that Spanish was the prevalent language in Portugal until I got on the plane.  Boy was I wrong!  The Portuguese have a completely different language of their own, although I’m sure some of the words are derived from Spanish or vice versa because there are some similarities. 

Today we learned two words when I asked for a bottle of water at a small snack shop owned and run by a man who didn’t really speak English:

“Agua” = water

“Obligada” = thank you

I had to point to the water in his showcase before he understood what I was asking for

Note to self: Google how to say a couple of basic things in the appropriate language for whatever country we’re visiting before we get there!
