Now This Is What French Food Should Taste Like!

At the recommendation of the hotel owner, tonight we tried a restaurant called Le Caveau du Theatre fairly close by. The menu was a bit more pricey than what we’ve been having so far – set menu, appetizer and main dish for €19 – but I suppose there’s a price to pay for quality!

I accidentally ordered a salmon pâté as my appetizer (I actually don’t like pâté but I keep getting it because I can’t read the menu!) so it wasn’t fantastic for me but actually pretty good.  Paul got ratatouille with a poached egg which was presented in a really neat way and tasted pretty good as well.

Up to this point, the meal was good, but when we tasted our main dishes, we started to really go “wow!” Paul had duck and I had filet mignon of pork and both dishes were cooked very well.  The meat was very tender and the sauces were rich and full of flavor – the cherry sauce that came with Paul’s duck complimented the duck perfectly and the creamy mustard sauce with the pork had just the right amount of zest.

Our idea of excellent French food came from a restaurant called La Gavroche in Vancouver and Le Caveau de Theatre was an excellent example of this type of fine French cuisine in France.   We continue to look forward to many more meals like this as we are spending a lot of time in France!
