My “slight” cold turned into a mega cold today, making it impossible to get out and do much. We tried going to Old Town, about 5 minutes from the hotel, but, after eating paninis and walking up part of Rue Victor Hugo (a major shopping street), I felt like I was going to faint so we went back to the hotel and I spent the rest of the day sleeping
When I finally woke up in the evening, it was close to 9:30 so we decided we would just go eat at Brasserie George again instead of walking back to Old Town where all the other restaurants are. The food had been pretty good last night and we had seen a few interesting dishes that we might want to try (a lot of people were eating beef tartar, which is served completely raw and the server mixes the meat with the spices right at the table in front of you and I saw some delicious chilled seafood platters being served, as well as some kind of pork dish that comes on a rack with a candle underneath to keep it warm).
I was tempted to try the beef tartar because so many people had been eating it, but Paul thought trying to eat totally raw meat might not be a good idea when we’re sick, so I went with a sauerkraut dish, which is the thing served on a rack with a candle underneath. I chose the one with smoked belly and loin of pork, frankfurters and montbeliard sausages in order to get a good mix of the different meats they serve with sauerkraut and when it arrived, the only thought on our mind was “who on earth eats this much sauerkraut?!?!” I mean, I like sauerkraut and all, but this must’ve been like 2 pounds of it and at best I finished a quarter – I have no idea why they give you so much! The meats themselves didn’t have much taste, except the montbeliard sausage had a flavor that reminded me of Indian spices, which was strange in a sausage. All in all, my dish yesterday was much better than this.
Paul decided to try French onion soup (he normally hates French onion soup, but he thought the authentic stuff might change his mind) and something called saddle of lamb. After a couple spoonfuls of soup, he decided he just doesn’t like French onion soup period and I ended up eating most of the bowl (and I thought tasted pretty good). The saddle of lamb was ok, but not exactly a great cut of lamb and it didn’t taste as rich and flavorful as the stuff we ate last night.
Both of us felt disappointed that this dinner didn’t wow us like the night before, but at least we got to try other stuff that had appealed to us on the menu. However, tomorrow, sick or not, we are determined to try a new restaurant!
Bonjour!!!! Who doesn’t looove french onion soup?!? But at least he gave it a try again…maybe too much veggie and not enough meat in that for his taste! But who am I kidding I hate sauerkraut! But give me 2 pounds of croissants and I’m game haha! You’re soo lucky to be eating your way thru France right now! My daily dinners pale in comparison to yours;(
PS Sux that you’re not feeling well…just OD on fluids and hopefully you’ll feel better soon. Maybe its a smart move to avoid suspiciously raw meats until you’re better. But I have heard that the French make wonderful steak tartare!
