For our last meal in the capital of gastronomy, we followed the suggestions we found online to head to the area by the Nouvel Opera House in old town. After wandering around in circles, we finally came across rue Mercière, the beginning of about a block of connected streets full of restaurants. We had a hard time deciding which one to eat at (they all had about the same amount of traffic and there was so many different types of food available), but we finally decided to go with a place that served frog legs because I love frog legs and I haven’t had them in a long time!
I ordered a Lyonaise salad (which is salad with frisée, hot bacon, and freshly poached egg), fried frog legs with macaroni and cheese, and mango soup (yes, soup!) for dessert. Paul got a cold tomato soup, baked chicken breast with macaroni and cheese, and chocolate mousse for dessert. Sadly, our last meal was not as tasty as our first (except the salad, which was excellent), but we got to have a nice chat with a couple of guys from Lyon (well, one was from Lyon, the other was from Belgium). They told us that this is the best area for eating in Lyon and we should try something called quenelle, a mixture of creamed fish, chicken, or meat with a light egg binding that is a specialty of Lyon. Unfortunately we had already got our food so it was too late to change our order, and we leave pretty early tomorrow morning so we won’t get to try quenelle, but we’re passing the information along for anyone else going to Lyon – let us know if you get a chance to try it! Oh, and make sure you go eat at one of the restaurants around rue Mercière, but I wouldn’t recommend La Cle A Noa
