After our morning in Mont-Saint-Michel, we drove 30 km to Saint-Malo, a walled port city in the Brittany region of northwest France,. Although it’s just as touristy, the scenery is beautiful and there’s more stuff to see and do (and the shops are open on Sunday!). Sightseeing aside, if there’s one reason to come to Saint Malo, it’s for the crêpes! The dessert crêpes we had today were better than any sweets we’ve had so far, including the portugese tarts Pasties de Belem.
Because I was super tired and lethargic and you have to pay per hour of parking, our tour of Saint Malo didn’t last long. We walked around the wall, but didn’t head out to small island of Grand-Bé (a major tourism hot-spot) just outside of the walled city, because it seemed kind of far to walk. On the north side of the wall we found a restaurant (sadly we didn’t get the name) that was full of people eating crêpes and had all kinds of award stickers on the door, so we decided to go in and try. I had a banana and chocolate crêpe and it was heavenly to me – just the right combination of chocolate and sliced banana and the yummiest crêpe I have ever tasted. Paul went with a freshly made waffle, covered with nutella and topped with a scoop of chocolate ice cream. He enjoyed his dessert almost as much as me, but felt it needed a bit more ice cream – can you say total chocaholic?
After walking around and window-shopping a bit, we got ready to leave and drive to our final destination, Caen, but I couldn’t resist buying one more crêpe from a take-out stand before leaving. I was hoping to find a salty crêpe, but didn’t know that they are called galettes here, so I didn’t realize that they were on all the menus I looked at today! I ordered another sweet crêpe, this time with strawberry jam, and although it wasn’t as good as chocolate and banana, it was still quite tasty. I will seriously miss having these crêpes after today!
