This morning we headed to Bern, a small city on a steep-sided peninsula in a crook of the River Aare in central Switzerland. Our train brought us here at about one o’clock, but I had misread the check-in info from our hostel, the Hotel Glocke, and didn’t realize you can’t check in until three o’clock because their reception is closed between twelve and three! The funny thing was the reception girl was there to open the door and tell us we couldn’t check in until three, and she offered to let us put our luggage in the storage area next to the reception desk. I don’t really understand why they bother to close the reception if the girl is going to be there letting people into the storage area anyways!

Having finished most of the sightseeing yesterday, today we headed to the suburbs of Geneva in search of an area called Carouge. I had read online that this was a neat area because of it’s unique architecture and it’s “checkerboard layout,” so I figured it was worth a visit, especially since we had free use of public transportation.

Because there isn’t a whole lot of “Swiss” food around (apart from cheese fondue but I hate cheese so we’re probably going to pass on fondue), we’re left with a lot of ethnic cuisine choices such as Chinese, Vietnamese, Turkish, Italian, and, of course, sushi! While I miss sushi like crazy, I can’t bring myself to pay 49 francs for a plate of questionable quality, so we decided to try an Ethiopian/Indian restaurant nearby our hostel.

Because yesterday was mainly just a travel/work day, we headed out to do a bunch of sightseeing today and have decided that, for the most part, Geneva could have been a one day trip as well! However, from what we’ve seen, Switzerland is so scenic and nice that it would be a shame to just have a really short stop here and the other two towns we will visit (Bern and Lucerne) are even smaller than Geneva so it made sense for us to spend a few days here.
Today our travels have taken us out of France and into Switzerland because it’s pretty close to Lyon so it made sense to detour into Switzerland before heading to the north of France. We had been told that Switzerland is very expensive, and when we booked our hotels/hostels for this week we found that we couldn’t find anything cheap, but after being in Geneva for just a couple of hours today, I am astonished at how expensive everything is!

For our last meal in the capital of gastronomy, we followed the suggestions we found online to head to the area by the Nouvel Opera House in old town. After wandering around in circles, we finally came across rue Mercière, the beginning of about a block of connected streets full of restaurants. We had a hard time deciding which one to eat at (they all had about the same amount of traffic and there was so many different types of food available), but we finally decided to go with a place that served frog legs because I love frog legs and I haven’t had them in a long time!
Yesterday I became more sick than the day before so we didn’t do much except go get some pasta in old town at night so we wouldn’t eat at Brasserie George again. Today, the last of our four days in Lyon, I felt slightly better and we set out to see as much of Lyon as we could before leaving.

My “slight” cold turned into a mega cold today, making it impossible to get out and do much. We tried going to Old Town, about 5 minutes from the hotel, but, after eating paninis and walking up part of Rue Victor Hugo (a major shopping street), I felt like I was going to faint so we went back to the hotel and I spent the rest of the day sleeping
Like most of our “travel” days so far, today was pretty much a write off once we trained from Nice to Lyon. The train ride wasn’t too long (about 3½ hours) but we both couldn’t really sleep last night (which seems to be becoming a trend the night before we move to a different city). When we added in the fact that it’s a weekday so Paul had to work in the late afternoon, we decided to just hang out at the hotel and nap.

After getting some dental treatment and meds in Barcelona, Paul’s tooth ache has mostly been under control, but we both started catching a cold this past week and it seems when his immune system is lowered, the pain starts to come back. So, before things got out of hand like last time, Paul decided to schedule his root canal while we’re in Nice and got in to see the dentist today at 11am.
